We are using the Default theme.  But we would like to use the menus from Demo5.  Is this possible?

Hi... You can switch between any demo you want from the wplms->demo switcher, refer: http://prntscr.com/fb4m8m This feature was added in yesterday's update i.e. 2.8.1 ---------------- If You want only the header styles, the  you can change the header styles from appearance->customize->header->header styles. Similarly you can change to any layout in wplms. But unfortunately the menus cannot be imported, the headers can be changed but the menu has to be created manually from appearance->menus.

I will give this a try.  Thank you. Related question:  We are using the blank child theme.  Does it update when the main theme does?  Thanks!

Hi.. As the name suggest its a blank theme, its provided for customization purpose only. So its never updated. You can use it and customize it according to your requirements, and the customizations will not be lost after update as this child theme is never updated.

Sorry to keep asking what seems like the same question, but so I am clear:  you've said that the child theme is never updated.  Does that mean that it always stays as v1.0 and none of the new features appear?  Or that because the main theme is updated, the child theme automatically receives those new features without having to run a separate update for it? Thank you for the clarification! :-)

Yes, you are correct. The child theme is only used to overwrite the parent theme. The website uses all the features of parent theme unless its overwritten by child theme. It simply means that all the features present in the parent theme will be present in your website while using the child theme.
