I am dev & had already did experiment on your code with do_shortcode and the the_content filter. Not worked for me too.
Atleast if Elementor & its elements works well then we are happy.
Check elementor issue too & try to get back with its solution

The visual composer issue in units has been fixed ,Vc is working on our courses pages on localhost but not on your site . This is somehow connected with buddypress overtaking the course pages functionality issue .
So, is anything we can do to have our units working properly in our site and not just in your end?
check the vc unit in your test course all you need is to make sure unit type is set to general or text .
I just changed them from video to general, and the problem persists.

The unit type should be "text" checking site and sharing video
We have added the fix in the upcoming wplms plugin update where you can run a sync. function atWP Admin - LMS - Functions which will detect all units built with Visual composer and convert them into text units.
