I noticed that accessing wp-admin and saving edited pages takes time. Is this normal? Are there any add ins that I can use to improve performance?

This just totally dependent on your hosting provider and number of requests made at that moment on the server . We do not recommend any caching plugins with wplms .They generally caches the pages and does no reflect the updated data on site and leads to false data view .
