Allow students to register using only their phone number

Hello there I want my students to be able to register using only their phone number or Email, like the registration system used in FaceBook, can you guide me please?

This is possible but it will require to make a new full customized function for this purpose which is not available in the theme. So this is not available in the theme. Wordpress uses username for registering and login, so you can make your users enter phone number by renaming username to phone number. PS: Customisation is not the part of theme support.

I understand that Customisation is not the part of theme support, I am just asking  for guidance please. your suggestion will make students unable to login using their names and they will still have to enter their Email during registration even if they chose to register using phone number

I am sorry this is not possible as email field is a required field for wordpress to create any user .
