The issue was only with child themes and it has already been resolved in 2.8.1 wplms theme update.
If it works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't work, then this suggests the website caching, because the code executes the same all the time.
So if you want to disable the ajax login and wants the old login, then simply go to wplms->buddypress->enable ajax registration, and disable it. It will disable the ajax login and the login will work as earlier.

This issue was resolved in the earlier versions, so please make sure your theme and plugins are updated to the latest version.
Also this issue can arise due to caching, if the same security parameter is cached by the browser.
So please try clearing the cache from your website and browser.
