We are unable to replicate this issue . The registration and activation module is completely handled by the buddypress and wordpress . There maybe issues with the smtp of your webhost .Try installing wp-mandrill plugin to check if its a smtp issue . If mails are sending when mandrill installed then please try contacting your webhost for this
