Old notifications

Is there a way to automatically delete old notifications on every user account? At this rate soon the  database will be clogged with tons of them because people read them but never delete them. In most cases they are not needed some days after being read. If there isn't could it be done/added? something like an option to delete ALL READ notifications older than x days (in an admin button or cron)
