1 . this is from buddypress to prevent spamming . You have to know the full username of the user.
2 . the live chat is totally different from buddypress messages , live chat stored on firebase and its live while bp messages stored on server .

Point 1: This feature is actually a part of Buddypress and we are using the same feature in our theme, this is how it works, and we cannot modify in that. It will show suggestions when you type username

On my end, yes I can see it is not working but there are some console errors, I need to check if fixing that will resolve this or is it a bug.
If I am not able to resolve at my end, will share the trello link here as a confirmation that it is a bug and need attention
