By the way, I realized the filter wplms_course_metabox only adds the custom field to backend editor of the course. I would also like to add it to the front-end editor.

This filter is used in the front end to add the tabs in course settings
wplms_course_creation_tabs which you can find in wplms front end plugin/includes/class.generate-fields.php
