make profile fields in the registration form not null

i want to make some fields of the registration form not null. even though I have marked them as required people can just enter a space and click register. is there a solution for that?

This is Buddypress code and they know their code better than us. Please ask them that if they have any hook there on which we can write any custom code to restrict users and show errors on entering null values
