User Profiles Across Multisite

Hi, I understand that user info is shared across multisite, so when I created multisites... how can the user profile information only be common across the multisite? If not, does this help - I came across this info:

"After activating multisite I installed and network activated BuddyPress. On network sub site users update their profile info, pictures etc and the changes are reflected across the network.
