Overcoming ChatGPT powered ILLUSION of competence in OnlineLearning

According to a recent study over 75% of students use ChatGPT for home work [ ref ] in Schools and over 50% in colleges. This begs the question is learning really happening ? Do we need to change how online learning curriculums are prepared ? The danger is that the illusion of competence can set in: students think they understand because they’ve seen the right answer, but they can’t reproduce it under exam or real-world conditions.

Today, ChatGPT is used like a calculator for every problem without reflection but learning is shallow. If used like an interactive teacher — where the student engages, challenges, and applies the information — learning can actually be deeper and faster than traditional homework.

However, the real challenge here is how to motivate students to use chatGPT like an interactive teacher.

Attempt First, Ask Later : Online lessons must come with an Appointment with the instructor who evaluates the user’s attempt in the first 2 minutes. WPLMS has this feature in our Appointments addon which the student books a session with the instructor and instructor can stop the progress of the student till the online session concludes.

Practical application : Book Learning is not enough, students today need context and application. Instructors can use ChatGPT to prepare themselves for practical implemntation and ask questions about the possible outcomes forcing students to evaluate themselves and use chatGPT as an Interactive teacher.

In some way AI is really a boon for Education. We are going back to the roots, Education not just for the sake of learning but for practical implementation.
