back to course on Assignment page skips all assignments except first

I have a course with 4 units, each unit has 7 assignments. When the assignment is completed and the student clicks back to course, it automatically goes to the next unit instead of forcing the student to finish the other 6 assignments first.

Well in that case you have to enable " Previous Units/Quiz must be Complete before next unit/quiz access " in your course settings : http://prntscr.com/fq1l9r

Hi... You are looking at the wrong place, please look at the screenshot shared by Alex, its the course settings where you need to change the setting not in wplms option panel.

Unfortunately, it looks like that screenshot is out of date with the version I have (2.8). I was able to find a Course Settings page under LMS General Settings, but there are no configurable options. See screenshot. Please advise.

The screenshot is not outdated. I am not sure why are you still looking in wp-admin screen. You simply need to edit the course from front end, refer: http://prntscr.com/fvzex3 Click on edit course button and then you can edit the course from front end, then go to course settings and enable this setting.
