How to complete courses from admin/instructor

Hello, Many of my courses are going to be completed outside of the website, or have been completed by other means. I can see that you can easily assign certificates to students, but how do you mark the course as complete? Is there a way to show the course completed once you assign that student the certificate? Or maybe the other way around: mark the course as complete and the certificate automatically gets assigned the certificate? Thanks!
