    Is there any way to turn off or hide unit forums completely? They are overkill.

    Please remove the page assigned in the wplms ->course manager ->Notes and discussions page  to remove unit comments from all units  . Removing unit comments in a particular unit is not available as of now but in the upcoming update we are adding this feature to selectively turn off or on comments in unit  .

    I'm talking about unit FORUMS not comments.

    a. Edit the Unit via front end or wp admin b. Locate the settings area, set the Unit forum to none. Alternate : To hide, simply add CSS : .unitforum{display:none;} in theme customizer - custom CSS
