WordPress Security Is a Daily Responsibility. It’s One Reason We Built AcademyLauncher.

WordPress has powered online learning businesses for years, including many built with WPLMS. Its flexibility is a major strength. It also means site owners need to keep WordPress core, themes, plugins, hosting, and integrations maintained and secure.

Security researchers regularly report vulnerabilities across WordPress plugins and themes. In one recent weekly report, Wordfence recorded 362 vulnerabilities across 247 plugins and four themes. That count describes vulnerabilities added to its database during the week; it does not mean every site was affected. The relevant question for each site owner is whether their installed software is affected, and whether it has been updated. (Wordfence’s report)

A recent report from The Hacker News describes a different kind of threat: a WordPress backdoor that can rebuild itself after parts of an infection are removed. Researchers found copies spread across files, database content, plugins, theme code, and shared memory. Removing one visible file or plugin may not remove the other components that can restore it. (The Hacker News report; Sucuri’s technical analysis)

The same news report also notes active exploitation of CVE-2026-1581, an unauthenticated SQL injection vulnerability in the wpForo Forum plugin affecting versions up to and including 2.4.14. Site owners using wpForo should check their version and install a fixed release. (CVE record)

Security was one reason we built AcademyLauncher

After years of building learning products in the WordPress ecosystem, we know what site owners can accomplish with it. We also know the work involved in keeping an academy running: managing updates and compatibility across plugins, handling hosting and backups, and investigating problems when something goes wrong.

That maintenance burden was one of the reasons we started building AcademyLauncher. We wanted to create a platform designed around running an academy, rather than requiring owners to assemble and maintain as many separate pieces themselves.

AcademyLauncher brings core academy functions into one platform, including courses and learning content, instructor appointments, payments, and analytics. Our goal is to reduce the operational complexity of running an online academy and give educators more time to focus on their learners and business.

That does not mean any platform can guarantee that vulnerabilities will never occur. Every software product needs ongoing security work. The difference we are working toward is a more integrated experience, with fewer separate systems for academy owners to configure, update, and troubleshoot.

What WordPress site owners can do now

Whether you run a WordPress site or another platform, a few security habits make a difference:

* Keep WordPress core, plugins, and themes updated, and check whether advisories affect software you actually use.
* Remove plugins and themes you no longer need.
* Protect administrator accounts with unique passwords and multi-factor authentication.
* Keep backups separate from your production site, and test that you can restore them.
* Investigate unfamiliar administrator accounts, changed files, redirects, or scheduled tasks.
* If you suspect a persistent infection, get help checking the database, files, server configuration, and logs. Deleting one suspicious plugin may not be enough.

WordPress remains a capable platform, and many site owners will continue to choose it. But when you run an online academy, security maintenance is part of the business—not a one-time task. The continuing stream of vulnerability reports is a reminder to keep that work visible, and it helps explain why we set out to build AcademyLauncher as a more integrated option for educators.
